Anita Shah - Founder & CEO
A Development Economist & Public Health Nutritionist, with over 20 years of international experience in humanitarian/development assistance and a passion for environmental impact and social justice, Anita is leading the charge toward sustainable packaging solutions in East Africa. No part of packaging should outlive the planet.
Green Stem Products was born in Kenya, where our founder, Anita Shah, saw an opportunity to turn agricultural waste into a valuable resource. Inspired by the local abundance of sugarcane and the need for sustainable solutions, she set out to create innovative solutions using Kenya’s own resources – transforming sugarcane byproduct into compostable packaging. She built the first manufacturing facility of its kind in East Africa from the ground-up, co-creating packaging products with ground-breaking technology that have gone through rigorous research and development.
Leading the transition to sustainable packaging by minimizing waste, maximizing value, and preserving our planet, Anita is building a circular economy that benefits local communities, reduces environmental impact, and offers businesses a truly responsible alternative to traditional packaging.

At Green Stem, we’re more than just a team. We are a community of strategic thinkers, engineers, food scientists, and production experts who bring a wealth of experience and a shared passion for doing things differently. We’re proud to be a female-led organization (70% of our team are women) and actively create opportunities for marginalized and differently-abled communities to contribute to the economy, while being able to support themselves and their families. We believe in empowering individuals to reach their full potential, and that a diverse team is a stronger team, whether it’s supporting women transitioning back into the workforce or creating inclusive workplaces for those with different abilities.
Making a Measurable Difference
Our commitment goes beyond the environment. We work with partners to create inclusive employment opportunities—supporting youth, women, and people with disabilities in Kenya. We have partnered with the Talking Hands Resources Center to provide employment opportunities for hearing-impaired individuals and Dr. Chouksy’s Albino Foundation as part of Green Stem’s impact hiring strategy. To create livelihoods for women released from prison, we partner with Clean Start to sow workwear and PPE for Green Stem’s team
Green Stem also adheres to the highest standards of safety, quality and sustainability and is proud to be certified by BRCGS. We are in the process of acquiring the TUV Home Compost OK certification. We are committed to continuous improvement and are constantly seeking ways to minimize our environmental footprint. We also believe in the power of data to drive change
